Minichamps New Releases – Week 43, 2014

Minichamps brings us a slew of new models this week, we already highlighted the latest M1 race car on the DS forums eariler this week – Niki Lauda winner. In my opinion the coolest livery to date since reintroducing the M1 mould. The feature car today is the 1934 Ford Edsel Model 40 Special Roadster. This resin based, sealed replica is so subtle that it’s perfect. Model will be limited to 999 pieces. Other new 1:43 additions include:

About the Ford Edsel Model 40… “In the beginning of the 50s, the American economy boomed and the consumers bought luxurious and large automobiles. Ford face one problem: it did now have a middle class version. The idea was to start a new automobile brand, which would heavily differentiate itself from the masses. All efforts were made to find a sound name, and market research was done in New York and Michigan. The name was supposed to symbolize elegance, speed, modern design and equipment. In the end Ford had gathered more than 10000 different names to choose from. In a board meeting the name Edsel was chosen by a sheer and spontaneous pick. The name represented Edsel Ford, one of the sons of Henry Ford, who died in 1943 and was in honor of him. It was a contrary decision towards the family, who did not want to see a given name of theirs in the media.

Ford underwent intensive public relations work in the stages prior to completing possible orders. The media hype paid off at first. The real technical developments were rather unimpressive and way behind the public%u2019s expectations. In total it was two: self-adjusting brakes and an electronically operating hood. The media responded with negative feedback. The Edsel was additionally way more expensive than the competition. Ford planned an annual production of 200.000 to 300.000 units and wanted to get break even after two to three years. Until the end of production only 100.847 models were built. The total loss of this model was specified at about 2 billion US dollars, measured in nominal figures for the year 2011.”
