TECNOMODEL Alfa Romeo 2000 Sportiva by Bertone 1954 1/18

In the late fifties, Alfa Romeo was looking to revive the glory of their prewar period. To do so they built several Disco Volantes for the track and the Sportiva as a road-going version. While neither project made production, both encouraged the design of several unique cars. The Sportiva was a small car that relied on the solid Alfa Romeo engineering from the prewar period. Like the Disco Volante, the Sportiva featured a tubular space frame and a version of the DOHC engine sourced from Alfa’s immediate post-war family saloon, the 1900. But to stay competitive with cars like the Mercedes-Benz SL300, Alfa Romeo focused on creating a small design to utilize all the 138 hp that was available. A short wheelbase chassis was sent to Bertone to be dressed in a body that would attract customers as series production sport car. Franco Scaglione was tasked with the project and together with Bertone they designed both a coupe and convertible version. The car never made it into series production and only four were built, two open-top spiders and two 2-seat coupés. The metallic silver coupé featured here is now part of the Alfa Romeo Museo Storico in Arese (near Milano) and a red coupé is part of the Axel Marx collection in Switzerland. Some of the design cues for the rear ended up on the Alfa Guilietta Sprint 1300.

Tecnomodel released the Alfa 2000 Sportiva Coupé at the end of last year and I got mine back in January. Almost all of my Alfa are in some shade of red but I make exceptions for coachbuilt and near-unique models such as this one. So I went with the metallic silver since it is the car I saw in the Museum in Arese in 2017. The model is featherlight which is quite unusual for a resin piece. It is very well executed. The paint is very smooth and has many exterior details faithful to the original. The interior on the flip side is quite simple. I did not report any QC issue. I have included a few pictures of the original car taken at the Museum.

What a beautiful piece. It does stand well next to its big brother.

Thanks a very nice piece indeed. Wish they would do the original Disco Volante too!

I believe it is a 1900 C52 Disco Volante. What a beauty.
