Shelby Collectibles 1966 Ford GT40 Mk IV #2

Post by Gavin » Fri Nov 02, 2018 1:44 pm

I found this at Meijer late last year for about a third less than what I'd seen online ($43 :woot:). This was one of my favorite buys last year. Not the most detailed of models, but the exterior looks really good to me & the styling in general of the Mk IV GT40s is flat-out incredible.

This #2 car was driven by Mark Donohue & Bruce McLaren to 4th place at the 1967 24 Hours of Le Mans.

yup...still here. Went quite for a few years & have definitely slowed down on the buy side.

I'm a bit late to the party on this one, but it looks like a very good basis for an upgrade project so I've just ordered the Gurny/Foyt Le Mans winner.

Superb photos!

Cheers,
Peter

Hi Gavin,
My MkIV arrived and all I can say is Wow! For the money I'm really impressed. Sure, it lacks the fine details but the basic bones are there to add the flesh too. Can't wait to get started on it, but in the meantime I've quickly repainted the knock off wheel nuts blue on the right hand side and given the rear lights a couple of coats of Tamiya clear red. I've never posted on here before so I'm sure if adding links to the images will work but let's try.

I post my upgrades on Diecast Exchange so keep an eye out on there for the GT40. I'm part way through upgrading my Bburago E Type Jaguar, so it will be a few weeks until I start on the Ford. The Mk II also impressed so I've ordered the Miles/Hulme version, again with the intention of stripping it down and adding all the bits and pieces that are missing. In both cases I'll be keeping the existing paint jobs.

I've seen a number of negative comments made about the SC GT40s when compared to the likes of Exoto and Autoart, but that is completely unfair. How good would those brands be if they sold for the same prices as SCs?

Cheers,
Peter

exactly right, Peter. The overall shape looks very good to me & close to the Exoto. Of course, it doesn't have even close to the detailing, but it looks excellent on the shelf. It is still one of my favorites.
