Why Isn’t 1:24 scale popular?
Why Isn’t 1:24 scale popular?
I always wondered why 1:24 never became popular among collectors. Seems they never really grew beyond the toy market, despite attempts by Minichamps, Schabak, Gama, among others in the 90s.
To me they strike a good balance between the benefits of 1:18 and compactness. I collected them but gave up since selection was slim. There were some good ones produced by no name manufacturers in the recent past, but that didn’t spark any real momentum. They continue to be great value but they leave much to be desired in terms of detail and quality. Still a good option if this is what your budget and space allows. If u enjoy the entry level market, it makes sense to spend less, especially since u r unlikely to recoup cost.
Any other 1:24 collectors out there who hope for a growing future?

Personally I never even considered the scale.

1:24 has neither the impressive presence of 1:18 and 1:12, nor the Fabergé egg wonder of 1:43.

to small to compete with 1/18 over detail, to big to compete with 1/43 over display space.
And, very important, for people who are already have a collection, they will not swap model size and start over.

Maybe because it’s not size between the next size up in the size my word for what the price ranges?

That's where the diecast manufacturers retreated to for Nascar, when they totally abandoned 1/18 scale. In that genre, they are cheaper to produce the Easter egg hunt of livery of the week.

1/24 is HUGE. Much bigger than 1/18. Most of the parts and detail up kits available out there are for 1:24 models. We're actually a relatively small niche

Oh, don't even start on plastic kits and available parts and decals, if you are a modeler, 1/24 is Heaven.StratosWRC wrote:1/24 is HUGE. Much bigger than 1/18. Most of the parts and detail up kits available out there are for 1:24 models. We're actually a relatively small niche

I have a funny car and top fuel dragster in 1/24. That seems to be the popular size for them as wellOldtimer wrote:That's where the diecast manufacturers retreated to for Nascar, when they totally abandoned 1/18 scale. Personally i also never saw why it didnt take it. To me it is an ideal size. I only have 2 - a SMTS lightweight E-type and a 330 Ferrari. I think the reason it never really took off was more down to the fact that 1/43rd and 1/18th had already become frontrunners - and a third scale perhaps wasnt warranted (or welcome)

One of my first models was a 1/24 Porsche 993 Carrera with opening parts and I loved it! As a kid I took it everyone until one day I dropped and broke it. Anyways, I like the scale, but never collected them due to lack of selection. But I do build 1/24 kits these days, which is where 1/24 scale dominates.

Yes 1:43 is way bigger than 1:18. And indeed waaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy bigger.Lucky13 wrote:Ahhhhh......One of the popular MYTHS amongst 1:18 collectors.
The other "elephant in the room" is 1:43.
Both are waaaayyyyyy bigger than 1:18.
Yet in Europe 1:24 is maybe a bit different than on the other side of the water. In moddelling it is by far the biggest scale. You can buy absolutely anything in 1:24, as long as you build it yourself.
But die-cast or resin, 'ready-to-go' models, in 1:24 are rare. They are here, but almost all of them are toys, Jada, BBurago, Maisto, Motor Max, etc. Good quality 1:24 models, like you can buy in 1:18, are scarce.
I'm talking about Western Europe now, I have no idea how things with 1:24 are in the rest of the world
(we don't do Nascar and dragsters..... )
Re: Why Isn’t 1:24 scale popular?
I am first and foremost a model builder, so 1/24 and 1/25 has always been something I pay attention to.
I think a lot of the previous comments nail it.
Some of my own thoughts are:
- 1/24 is heaven for a builder: lots of subject matter
- diecasts in this scale are typically more toylike and other than the franklin / danbury mint, and a couple other manufacturers, there are not many high quality diecasts in this scale. Yet. Remember 1/18 started in a similar way though. I have seen 1/18 grow from its infancy into what it is now: 1/24 is growing I think. At least in terms of quality.
- 1/18 wins for detail and presence, while 1/43 is a handy size. 1/24 is somewhere in between. High detail (to similar extent of 1/18 models) is quite possible.
- I look at developments such as proper hinges in some of the recent 1/24 offerings, and popularity for subject matter like trucks, emergency and commercial vehicles, and 1/24 has a TON of potential.

It would be interesting to see a breakdown of the manufacturing costs for the different sizes of a car

Good luck getting that info!MysteriousRJC wrote:It would be interesting to see a breakdown of the manufacturing costs for the different sizes of a car
